Materials testers examine different materials and carry out related processes on these materials.

There are various specialisms:

Depending on the specialism, materials testers take samples of specific materials, e. g. of plastics or metallic materials.

They carry out measurements and tests and document the results.
They check the components of technical systems.
They plan, direct and monitor the processes involved in the heat treatment of metallic item

Materials testers work in various sectors, for example,

for manufacturers of semi-finished products, parts and products made of plastics or composite materials
in the aviation, automobile, railway, shipbuilding industries
in steel work and foundries
in plant construction, engineering and vehicle construction
in energy management and for materials testing institutes
in the building trade and in hardening treatment shops

This profession is not regulated in Germany.
