In some cases, high costs are involved in the recognition of a degree or professional qualification completed abroad. This presents a financial challenge for immigrant skilled workers. To overcome this hurdle, the recognition grant pilot project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research was launched in 2016.
The recognition grant and the financial support for training are now being continued and supplemented by a further instrument. In future, costs incurred as part of a skills analysis for determining vocational competencies will also be eligible for funding. As part of the extension, applications for the funding instruments above can now be made up to 30 June 2023 to the central funding office at the Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (f-bb). Essentially, applications for the reimbursement of costs can be made within nine months of funding being confirmed but in any case no later than by 30 September 2024. The total funding for costs applied for should be at least €100 per person. Details of services specifically eligible for funding are shown below.
Recognition of foreign professional, education and training qualifications (recognition grant) up to €600 for:
Training in context of recognition procedure (financial support for training) up to €3000 for:
Skills analysis for determining professional competencies (skills analysis) up to €1,200 for costs incurred as part of a practical demonstration of evidence, instructed by the competent authority, of the professional qualification, e.g.
The training grant closes a funding gap, in particular for employed people on low incomes. The application for the recognition grant must be made before the start of the recognition procedure and the financial support for training must be applied for early before the start of the training. The funding applications can be completed at most institutions which also provide advice on recognition.
The recognition grant project is being implemented by the Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (f-bb). You can find further information here in the portal or by email to anerkennungszuschuss@f-bb.de.
